About the Event

Do you identify as a mother and as Black or mixed with Black heritage?

Are you currently raising or have raised a mixed (multiracial/multiethnic/transracial or transnationally adopted) family?

Do you wish to be in dialogue and community with others who may connect to your experiences?

If so, we want to welcome you to the Black Mothers: Mixed Families dialogue series hosted by Nicole Nfonoyim-Hara & Alissa Paris.

In hosting this space we seek to provide an opportunity to have intentional dialogue with other Black or mixed with Black heritage mothers who want to dive into the complexities of their lived experiences, learn, and share. These live workshops may include written reflections, large group discussion, sharing our stories in smaller groups, and guest speakers or community experts.

At MidWest Mixed we work to disrupt the single story around the term mixed, which often means fair or light skinned people who are assumed to be biracial. We will be addressing anti-Blackness, colorism, shadeism, featurism, texturism, and light-skin worship among other loaded topics and themes. We understand that Blackness is not a monolith, and these words can have different meanings across the diaspora and throughout history.

The facilitators are prepared to discuss how to support you in moving through that discomfort and setting boundaries when necessary.
